Lieutenant Jeff Wersal
I was raised in the St. Peter area, attending school in St. Peter along with my twin brother Jon, and my older brother, Ryan. Leading by example and with a combined 55 years of public service, our parents instilled in us a strong work ethic from a young age. My mom, Chris, retired as the Assistant County Administrator and Director of Human Resources in Nicollet County. Also dedicated to his community, my father, Don, spent many years working as a criminal investigator for the Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office and retired as Chief Deputy after 33 years of service.
My own commitment to a work ethic that my parents and community would be proud of began when I was in high school and continued through college. I always held at least two jobs working in numerous settings, including fast food, a local grocery store, Cargill Seed, a dairy farm, and a metal fabrication shop. Working in a variety of settings early on in my life has uniquely qualified me to relate to people from all types of backgrounds, something for which I am very grateful. During this time, I also graduated high school and began my pursuit of both a law enforcement degree and a childhood dream.
I graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement in 1999. While attending classes and after graduation, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work for the Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office as a custody officer, dispatcher, and eventually as a part-time deputy. In January of 2000, I began working full-time as a police officer with the City of North Mankato.
It wasn’t long before I realized that the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office was where I could best serve the community. In 2002, I proudly accepted a position as a deputy working alongside Sheriff Brad Peterson, who promoted me to Lieutenant five years later. In 2015, I accepted my current position as Commander of the Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force, allowing me to continue serving my home community.
My wife, Crystal, and I have made our home in rural Lake Crystal with our twelve-year-old son, Jake, and my eighteen-year-old stepson, Max. Both of our sons are enrolled in the Lake Crystal school district. My free time is spent enjoying my family, the outdoors, hunting, riding ATV, and doing yard work. During the fall harvest I enjoy helping my father-in-law on the farm. I also co-own 2 Pigs BBQ with retired deputy and friend Dave Karge. I especially enjoy serving as Youth Chair for the Blue Earth County Pheasants Forever Chapter and look forward to continuing to find new ways to serve our great community.
